In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility.
