Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
