An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
