"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: I also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile fans have publicly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos often feature them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global following.

But the band will forever be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
